You will probably not meet any celebrities like these ones. But you will surely get to know other Norwegians, less known to the world, but no less interesting, likeable and happy to open their homes to you. Enjoy some months with a Norwegian host family, living somewhere in this beautiful country of only 4,5 million inhabitants, of vikings and trolls, of high mountains and long fjords, of the midnight sun and pure nature! Every year, about 400 young people from all over the world take part in this programme. Since it was started in the late 60's, the Working Guest programme has welcomed more than 13.000 young foreigners to Norway!
What is a working guest?
A Working Guest is a young person, between 18 - 30 years old, who is invited to stay and work for a few months with a Norwegian family who runs a farm. You will get to know the Norwegian people, culture, customs and lifestyle "from the inside", more deeply than as an ordinary tourist. As a Working Guest and member of the host family, you take part in their everyday life, both in work and in leisure. During working hours you are expected to help the family with tasks connected to their farming business. You will get free board and accommodation, and receive pocket money to cover your expenses on trips, souvenirs, personal equipment etc. Most families invite Working Guests for 2 or 3 months, but you can apply to stay up to 6 months, all year round.
The applicant:
is between 18 and 30 years of age
speaks English fluently
must be motivated to live with a Norwegian family and adapt into their way of life
should have agricultural experience
must be prepared to help with various tasks proposed by the employer
works maximum 35 hours a week
will have 1 1/2 day off weekly
can stay from 2 - 6 months
Your host family:
is an ordinary family, with or without children, running a farm full- or part-time
has at least one member of the family who speaks some English
will offer you free board and lodging
will offer you a minimum of NOK 825,- a week as pocketmoney
will need your help with for instance picking berries and fruit, harvesting vegetables, haymaking, caring for animals etc.
